A container format is a metadata format which specifies how different data elements are stored and read in a single file. Container formats are often found in multimedia applications, where a variety of different file types have to be stored and played back simultaneously.

Modern container formats can store and synchronously play a variety of audio and video streams, subtitles, chapter information and tags.
