FAIR Data Austria (2020–2022)
The FAIR Data Austria project (2020-2022) supported the sustainable development of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and contributed to a stronger knowledge transfer between universities, economy and society. The implementation of the FAIR principles in research data management (RDM) played an essential role in this context. Building and developing next-generation repositories for research data, code and other research outcomes, and developing training and support services for an efficient RDM, compliance with the FAIR principles was ensured. Together with FAIR Data Austria, the projects Austrian DataLab and Services and RIS Synergy form the project cluster Research Data and provided in cooperation complementary building blocks in the field of research data management. Project partners were Graz University of Technology, Institute of Interactive Systems and Data Science (ISDS), Vienna University of Technology, Center for Research Data Management, University of Vienna, Library and Archives, Department of Repository Management PHAIDRA-Services. Further cooperation partners were Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Medical University Graz, and University of Innsbruck. In addition, more than 20 associated partners, including universities and international initiatives, were working on the project. The Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) was the funding body. The project was completed in 2023.
e-Infrastructures Austria Plus (2017–2019)
E-Infrastructures Austria Plus was a follow-up project to e-infrastructures Austria. It involved the Medical Universities of Graz, Innsbruck and Vienna, the Vienna University of Technology, the Universities of Graz, Innsbruck (project management) and Vienna, the Vienna University of Economics and Business and UMIT Tirol. The aim was to establish an infrastructure for eScience in Austria. This included policies for research data management, data management plans, institutional repositories for research data, standards for metadata according to the FAIR principles, DOI infrastructure and initial steps towards the implementation of Electronic Lab Notebooks. The results are summarized in the project report.
e-infrastructures Austria (2014–2016)
The project e-Infrastructures Austria reacts to the opportunities and challenges that arise through the responsible handling of digital objects and new technologies. The overall objective of the project is the coordinated construction and further development of repository infrastructures throughout Austria.
It is a central concern to involve research communities, libraries and IT services of all national academic and non-university scientific institutions and to work together to develop knowledge for the development of local repositories, to pool existing know-how and resources and to make available to all institutions participating in the project deliver. Within the three-year project period, all partner institutions set up a local document server or have access to a suitable document server. At the same time, the design of infrastructure facilities for research data and other digital objects (e.g., multimedia content, e-learning content) and the determination of future research data services are carried out.
Open Education Austria (2016–2018)
Open Education Austria is a collaborative initiative among Austrian universities to develop a national infrastructure for creating, discovering, and sharing open educational resources (OER).

With Open Education Austria, the libraries, e-learning centres, and central computing services of our partnering universities will join forces for the first time to support grassroots educators in the development of innovative OER materials and educational strategies. The mission of the project is to boost the overall quality of teaching and learning in Austria’s classrooms, as well as expand access to best practice research and training within the expert community.
Open Education Austria was launched in June 2016 with the generous support of a Ministry of Science, Research and Economics grant for higher education. The expected completion date is December 2018.
